The Better Mindset by Joseph Ari'el Towne

Best is a finish line. Better is a direction.

Everything you need is already inside you.

The problem isn't your talent. It's the noise: the perfectionism that keeps moving the goalposts, the imposter syndrome that haunts your quiet moments, the internal voice that demands to understand every step before you take action.

Three decades of work inside the rooms where performance actually happens: in the tunnel before the big game, on set, in the studio, in the quiet moments before the lights come on.

A framework that walks with you through the practice reps, through the door, into the spotlight, and long after the lights go down.

This book is about the arc of becoming. One breath. One rep. One percent at a time.

A road map for people who are done chasing perfect

Somewhere along the way you were handed a goal that sounds inspiring and works like a trap: become your best self. Best is a destination. Destinations have finish lines. And when you're oriented toward a finish line, every stumble reads as failure and every detour feels like falling behind.

Giving your best right now isn't the problem. Believing that best is a fixed destination is.

The Better Mindset is a road map to clarity, reverse engineered from where you're going rather than guessed forward from where you've been. Not a ten-step program. Not a thirty-day challenge. Something quieter and more permanent: the optimized version of you, built one step at a time, one repetition at a time, one percent at a time.

Wisdom in action

It isn't an intellectual exercise. It's not enough to learn these principles — you have to apply them. That's the unlock, and the competitive edge.

This book lives at the intersection of art and sport, where the tools that make a great athlete and the tools that make a great performer turn out to be the same tools. Here's what you'll build:

  • The 1 Percent Better System — how improvement actually compounds, and why "more, faster" is the fastest way to quit
  • The Four Types of Mind — positive, negative, neutral, flow: the gift and the trap of each, and how to choose the one the moment is calling for
  • Your Battle Cry — a phrase for the moment that holds under pressure, forged from evidence instead of hype
  • The Golden Hour — the four-step protocol for the window right after a performance, when the story you'll carry forward gets written
  • The Rings — mapping the circles of support that determine your real capacity
  • Human Alchemy — the honest alternative to "fake it till you make it"

Because when we know Better, we do Better. One breath. One rep. One percent at a time.

About the Author

Joseph Ari'el Towne

Joseph Ari'el Towne doesn't coach from the sidelines. For three decades he has worked inside the rooms where performance actually happens — as an actor, a coach, and a teacher who never stopped doing the work himself.

He learned the lesson at the center of this book the hard way. At twenty-one he walked into the audition he was certain would confirm him, carrying the news that his mother was in surgery. He didn't get in. Weeks later, she died. He spent the next two decades believing both events were verdicts before understanding he'd been chasing the wrong thing entirely — approval, dressed up as excellence.

Twenty-two years later, with a career he was proud of, he chose a word for the year: Better. Then the world stopped, his marriage ended, and he found himself building the road map in the dark, while walking it. The Better Mindset is the map he wishes he'd had.

Today he lives at the intersection of art and sport, where the tools that make a great athlete and the tools that make a great performer turn out to be the same tools. He hosts The Better Mindset Podcast and is committed to leaving the world Better than he found it — starting with the people in the room.

What others are saying

"Mindset gets talked about all the time, but very few people teach you how to practice it. The Better Mindset gives you practical, actionable tools you can use every day. It takes something ethereal and turns it into a repeatable system that you can actually apply to your actual life."

Matthew Lillard
Actor

"Most books about performance tell you to chase your best self. Joseph does something braver — he tells you to let that go. This book will change the way you think about what you're building and why, and it will meet you exactly where you are."

Kate Harris
Author, The Poet's Rebellion

"Over the last few decades working closely with legendary leaders in the world of sports — Kobe Bryant, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson — I've come to appreciate what it takes to get better out of people. Joseph's book has shown me a pathway for living with clarity, purpose, and service."

Andrew D. Bernstein
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 2018

"The stories we put into the world matter, and the stories we tell ourselves on the way there matter even more. This is a book I want in the hands of the next generation of storytellers, performers, and artists."

Anthony Sparks

"Meaningful design doesn't happen by accident. Neither does a meaningful life. The Better Mindset is a blueprint for designing your future. Intentionally."

Ken Black
Creative Director — Nike, Jordan & GMR Marketing

"It's one of those rare books in which the author has lived every word, and you can feel it. Joseph has a gift for shifting the part of you that walks into a room before the rest of you does."

Harris III
Founder of Istoria; Author, The Wonder Switch

"It moves away from chasing perfection and brings it back to something simple: get a little better every day. Read the book and use it. It's meant to be lived, not just read."

Susan Fox

"I walk away from conversations with Joe not just feeling better, but thinking better, sharper, and more aligned with what I'm trying to say as an artist."
